Michelangelo...Shmichelangelo!

So here I am home alone. Preston and Everett left for the weekend. I thought, "Hey, I'll paint a Masterpiece...how hard could it be? Without any distractions it will be easy." Preston had bought me a paint set for Christmas, knowing how much I wanted to learn how to paint. So after hours and hours of crappy paintings that were very soon thrown away, I sat on my couch feeling sorry for myself. "Why am I not good at anything?", I said out loud.
As soon as I said that, my Mom called me. She asked me how I was and I told her of my misfortunes, and how I wasn't good at anything. She laughed and said, "Did you expect to be good at it without any practice?"I admitted that I did. Hey why not, it could happen. She then began to tell me of all my other talents and that if I wanted to be a great painter all I had to do was practice. "Start with the kid stuff," she said. Meaning, don't stress myself out with trying to be amazing the first time. "Look at Michelangelo," my mother said. "He painted some weird stuff." I guess that's her way of saying, "Who decides who is great?"
So a note to all of us over achievers...give yourself a break. Just work on the "kid stuff".
P.S. Isn't my Mother beautiful!

Way good thought! Aren't moms great? Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog! I think YOU'RE amazing! The Rexburg temple is seriously one of my favorites too. It's so beautiful! We were there for like four hours yesterday (long, funny story!) but the whole time I was just in awe of how gorgeous it is. Oh, I found the pics of the temple at this site: http://www.ldsmag.com/churchupdate/080208rexburg.html#_begart. Have a good Sunday!

That's why I loved that book Emily of New Moon. She was a writer because that's what she did. All the time. And it took years (and three books) to be really great. Although the last book is Super depressing. Oh, and I recently read an interesting article in Dec/Jan issue of Psychology Today and it was about creative families. It had a piece on the 5 Browns. I think that's their names. Anyway--they said if anyone spends 3 or 4 hours a day working on something for 10 years they will get good. SO there you go!

You guys are both beautiful!

10 years!!! I can't wait that long! Well, that's good to know. There are so many things that I want to be good at. I want to be a great writer, musician, and artist (like you), but where do you start if you have all these things you want to be good at? I read this article in this months Ensign about living a balanced life. It was really good, and it made me start thinking about how I can accomplish all my goals in this life. I just haven't really come up with any great ideas. What do you do Drea? You're good at a lot of things.
P.S. I think we come from a creative family and a good looking one. :) Don't you think?
